The Academy's historic and contemporary Hawai'i-based collection of paintings, graphic arts, decorative arts, and sculpture, the source for this gallery's installation, is unrivalled and provides a compelling reflection and documentation of the modern history of Hawai'i through the eyes of its talented artists.

The Royal Hawaiian, a Luxury Collection Resort has partnered with Matson Navigation Company Archives to present a collection of recently discovered and rarely seen photographs of aviatrix Amelia Earhart, documenting her time in Hawai!i from December 22, 1934 to January 12, 1935 and March 18 - 20, 1937. The opening of the exhibit coincides with the anniversary of her birthday on July 24. The photos will be on display in the resort's Coronet Lounge until the end of the year. The collection includes 65 black and white photographs that document Amelia Earhart and her Lockheed Vega, a red high wing monoplane (identification on wing NR-965-Y) on Matson S.S. Lurline passenger ship and in Hawaii.

This exhibition commemorates the annual convention of the International Chinese Snuff Bottle Society, held in Honolulu in October 2010. The staff of the Academy would like to extend special thanks to Mr. Y. F. Yang who has made their collection available for the exhibition, allowing us to display a wide range of superb snuff bottles from the 18th and 19th centuries, including a number of exceptionally rare early inside-painted bottles, to our Hawaii audience.

Guided tours of the collection are offered for Tuesday through Sunday.

On view will be approximately 150 works of art from Thailand and Cambodia, many of which have never been displayed at the museum.

'The Sensory Garden' was started in 2001 and took 12 months to complete and was the first garden to feature a concrete sidewalk. There are two raised beds made from natural rock that measures 32-inches high by 12-feet wide by 42-feet long. A six-foot wide sidewalk surrounds the beds and connects to the service road. Screened topsoil and peat moss were used to backfill the gardens. Rocks were added as an accent. Plants with smell and touch were planted near the edge. Plants with more unique shape and color were planted in the middle of the garden.

The 'Boardwalk Garden' (formerly called the Bogwalk Garden) has a unique 180-foot boardwalk constructed to give participants the feel of actually entering and experiencing a bog. Water plants are featured in 12 tubs that line the path. Intriguing trees, ground shrubs, and groundcovers give the viewer a feel for an interesting experience.

The garden is a nearly perfect circle 20-feet in diameter with a border of gray arbor stones that surround the two sizes of hardscape material of gravel and pea gravel. The garden has an eight-foot long shiny black wood and fiberglass resin "gnomon" marking solar time. Skillfully handcrafted roman numerals are recessed into concrete blocks to record the sun's travel during the day along points around the sundial.

'Hawaiian Alphabet Tree Garden' is an exceptional garden all by itself. Native Hawaiian trees accent the 13 consonants, vowels, and okina found in the Hawaiian language. For every letter there is a selection of native trees. Trees represented include alahee, hame, kawila, koa, lonomea, naio, ohia, papala, wiliwili, and `aalii.
